While Martinez, a Cuban defector, entered the July 2 signing period as the top international free agent on the market (according to certain outlets), poor judgment on the part of his handlers led to his going unsigned for several months, and in turn the market dried up. He ended up signing for $3 million with the Cubs after pulling away from a $2.5 million deal with the Giants at the last minute. Shady dealings aside, Martinez has received comparisons to Andruw Jones for his physical appearance, tools, offensive profile and ability to stick in center field. While those comparisons will be difficult for him to live up to, he should be highly coveted in dynasty league drafts as he will be 21 at the start of the 2016 season, so he will require much less patience than other J-2 signings. He may need a couple of seasons in the minor leagues but could be worth the wait, as he has the potential to be above average in every offensive category.
