Signs with indy ball team
Olivera signed a contract Tuesday with the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League, Robert Murray of FanRagSports.com reports.
Analysis
Olivera was a much-ballyhooed signing out of Cuba back in the spring of 2015, when he landed a six-year, $62.5 million contract from the Dodgers. He never lived up to expectations on or off the field, slashing .245/.296/.378 over 108 career plate appearances with the Dodgers and Braves before he was charged last April with misdemeanor assault and battery. The Braves later dealt him to the Padres last July in a salary dump, but he was waived shortly thereafter. Olivera served an 82-game suspension for the assault charge and won't be subject to further discipline should he return to affiliated baseball at some point, but the 32-year-old will need to prove his worth on the independent circuit before organizations take another look at him.

Olivera was sent from the Dodgers to the Braves in his first professional season stateside and never really got a chance to settle in, as he played for six minor league teams across the two organizations. In his 24-game cup of coffee with the Braves at the end of the season, he showed a glimpse of the power that lit up scoreboards in Cuba, as he slugged .405 with seven extra-base hits including two home runs. Olivera was a career .323/.407/.505 hitter in Cuba who supplemented his regular double-digit home run totals with four seasons of at least 20 doubles in Cuba’s short, sub-100 game seasons. Olivera is unlikely to be a big-time home run hitter — his seasonal home run totals in Cuba were around half of what sluggers like Yoenis Cespedes and Jose Abreu produced — but the Braves have little to lose by letting Olivera cook and giving his gap power a chance to shine.
