A 2011 first-round draft pick, Panik landed in Toronto/Buffalo on a minor-league deal and ended up playing a lot more than expected to help cover injuries. The glove-first second baseman turned in a surprising walk rate on the season while also striking out more than he had ever done in his career, without anything to show for it. Normally, when a guy doubles his strikeout rate, he is selling out for power, but Panik's slugging percentage dropped 36 points from 2019. Panik is the type of player you pick up in a single-league format when your fringe middle infielder gets demoted or hurt and you need a warm body in the spot. In standard leagues, you're almost better with the dead spot in your lineup than if Panik is playing every day.

                  Linked to Yankees
Panik is drawing interest from the Yankees in free agency, Buster Olney of ESPN reports.
                  Analysis
The Yankees are exploring ways to add more left-handed bats to their roster, and Panik could be a good fit as a versatile infielder who happens to be from the area. The 29-year-old elected free agency rather than accepting an outright assignment to Triple-A in November after hitting .244/.315/.336 with five home runs and 39 RBI over 142 games with the Giants and Mets last season. There is mutual interest between the parties but no deal appears imminent, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
