Taschner finished last year with a 4.88 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP, while also dealing with a shoulder injury. With the Giants’ improved bullpen, he may not have a spot on the team in 2009.
Taschner finished the 2007 season with a 5.40 ERA and 1.460 WHIP over 50 innings. A left-hander, Taschner is far from a specialist, as lefties hit .316 off him while righties batted just .176. He'll only be a middle reliever in 2008.
Taschner had a horrendous 2006 season in the majors, finishing with an 8.38 ERA over 19.1 IP. He was actually pretty successful in Triple-A, however, ending up with a 68:17 K:BB in 49.1 IP. He’s nothing more than a middle reliever.
The Giants have a small factory in Danville where they produce middling relievers and fifth outfielders. Taschner will likely take Scott Eyre's place as the lefty specialist, providing minimal fantasy value but lots of commercial breaks.
The Giants' first-round selection in the 1999 draft is healthy again after shoulder surgery in 1999, an nerve procedure in 2001 and Tommy John surgery in 2002. He'll remain in Triple-A for 2005.
