Rest-of-Season Projections

Released by TB
The Rays released Brentz on Thursday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
The Rays took a flier on Brentz in the offseason after he finished 2024 with a 12.62 ERA and 2.67 WHIP over 30.2 total innings between the Royals' Double-A and Triple-A affiliates. He didn't show many signs of improvement in the Grapefruit League, giving up three earned runs in 4.1 frames alongside a 3:7 K:BB. Rather than attempting to get him back on track in the minors, the Rays will simply send the 30-year-old reliever back to the open market.

Ryan Rufe analyzes applies a couple of advanced stats to analyze bullpens across the league. Is it time to give up on Jake McGee in San Francisco?

2022 Fantasy Outlook
After seven years in the minors, toiling for four organizations, Brentz made the Royals roster as a flame-throwing lefty reliever. We went on to collect 15 holds and two saves in his freshman campaign. His 3.66 ERA appears shiny, but his ERA estimators peg it at least half a run shy of expected. Moreso, a 13.3% BB% fueled a high 1.28 WHIP. While an 8.8% BB% over his final 22 appearances is encouraging, Wells' minor league track record indicates he'll be hard-pressed to maintain the reduced level over a full season. On the plus side was a high 27.3% K%. Wells likely won't be the Royals full time closer, but with today's bullpen usage, he could gather a handful of saves with more bountiful holds. Strikeouts are also part of the package, just beware of an incendiary walk rate putting ratios in peril.
