Jared Shuster

26-Year-Old PitcherRP
Chicago White Sox
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Shuster saw his first MLB work in 2023, making 11 starts and posting a 5.81 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with nearly a 1:1 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 52.2 innings pitched. The former first-round pick was sent to the White Sox in the offseason where he'll be given a chance to make the rotation out of Spring Training. Thought of as a high floor pitcher in the past, Shuster will need to recover from a down season in 2023 which also saw him post a 5.13 ERA with Triple-A Gwinnett. The left-hander will need to prove his worth to fantasy managers before being considered for much more than spot starts in 2024. Read Past Outlooks

Shuster came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Angels, giving up one hit and striking out one over three scoreless innings.
ANALYSIS
The 26-year-old lefty was making his fourth start in 37 big-league appearances this season, and the three frames represented Shuster's biggest workload since a four-inning relief stint July 26. He's put together decent numbers in a swingman role this year, posting a 4.35 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 52:29 K:BB through 70.1 innings, but it's not clear whether the White Sox will give him another crack at winning a full-time spot in the rotation next spring.

This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2021
Shuster was a first-round pick for the Braves in a 2020 Draft class which also included Spencer Strider and Bryce Elder. While Shuster might have been passed by both of those guys, he's certainly a very good prospect in his own right, having posted a 3.29 ERA and 145:38 K:BB over 139.1 innings between Double- and Triple-A in 2022. The left-hander was much better at Double-A Mississippi than he was at Triple-A Gwinnett and he could be more of a back-end starter if he can't rediscover the zip on his fastball that he showed at Wake Forest. Shuster has a pretty high floor as is, though, and looks to be nearly major-league ready.
Shuster, a 6-foot-3, 210-pound southpaw from Wake Forest, was one of the biggest risers up draft boards prior to getting selected by Atlanta with the No. 25 overall pick in last year's draft. He dramatically improved his control in the Cape Cod League (1.41 ERA, 0.78 WHIP, 35:5 K:BB in 32 IP) and showed significantly improved velocity in four starts last spring. His fastball now touches 97 mph, sitting in the low-to-mid 90s. He has a near flawless delivery, so he could very well hold his control and velocity gains. In addition to his newfound plus fastball, Shuster has a plus changeup and a breaking ball that could be an above-average offering. It all adds up to a potential No. 2 or No. 3 starter -- a far cry from the backend starter/swingman he looked like a year ago. He should quickly become a top-100 prospect if his improved stuff is evident in his first full season as a pro.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Chance to start Tuesday?
PAtlanta Braves
May 14, 2023
Shuster could be called up to start Tuesday against the Rangers with Dylan Dodd not an option for Atlanta after he pitched Sunday for Triple-A Gwinnett, reports Mark Bowman of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Shuster was expected to pitch against Boston last Wednesday but was passed over in favor of an opener, and he remains an option for Atlanta this week. The big club will be without Max Fried and Kyle Wright due to forearm and shoulder injuries, respectively, for the next two-plus months, which should provide plenty of chances for Shuster to enter the rotation even if he's not called upon for Wednesday's contest.
