Ramirez won the final spot in the Angels' six-man rotation to open the 2018 season but made just two poor starts before being diagnosed with a torn UCL and undergoing Tommy John surgery. The procedure took place in mid-April, so a typical recovery timeline would have him able to return sometime in the middle of 2019. When he makes it back, it could be as a reliever to ease the stress on his arm. Ramirez pitched out of the bullpen through 2016 without much success before a move to the rotation in 2017 saw him post a surprisingly decent 4.15 ERA. If he can get back to that form in the second half of this season, he could be a capable deep-league fill-in, but even during that one successful season, his strikeout rate was just 16.9%, so he's more of an innings eater than a fantasy asset. An innings eater who is unlikely to eat any innings until the second half of the year can safely be ignored at draft time.

After bouncing around the league as a second-rate reliever, Ramirez surprisingly found new life as a starter with the Angels before going down with a forearm injury in August. He made a dramatic change in his approach to opposing hitters, limiting his fastball usage to just over 50 percent, down from 73.2 percent in 2016. Instead Ramirez threw more breaking pitches, following the Matt Shoemaker blueprint. Ramirez still wasn't all that good, managing just a 6.4 K/9 and 4.71 FIP, but he kept the walks in check (3.0 BB/9) and was at least capable in his role as an innings eater for four and a half months of the season. Depending on what the Angels do this winter, Ramirez may return to the rotation in 2018. The AL West has several pitcher-friendly parks, but the lack of swing-and-miss stuff keeps Ramirez merely on the periphery of mixed-league consideration.

Ramirez seemed to always have trouble translating his minor league successes to the majors, and the beginning of 2016 made it seem like more of the same. He managed to garner a callup to the Reds in late April, but the 28-year-old could only muster a putrid 6.40 ERA and 2.0 HR/9 across 32.1 innings before Cincinnati decided to cut ties with him in June. The Angels swiped him off waivers shortly thereafter, and despite his rough numbers in the past, he proved to be an effective reliever for the Halos. The right-hander concluded his time in Anaheim with a 2.91 ERA, a 1.19 WHIP, and even one save he picked up at the end of September. Ramirez will get stretched out and get a chance to make the club as a starter in 2017, but this has the feel of desperation on the part of Anaheim, so owners in most formats can afford to take a wait-and-see approach.

Ramirez made 20 relief appearances between the Mariners and Diamondbacks last season, failing to impress at either stop. He was better at Triple-A Tacoma (2.50 ERA) and Triple-A Reno (2.88), but he struggled with control everywhere, as he has done most of his career. More perplexing is how he only struck out 6.08 K/9 with a mere 15.1 K% even though his fastball averages a robust 95.4 mph. The 27-year-old Ramirez agreed to a minor-league contract this offseason with the Reds that includes an invitation to spring training. He'll compete for a bullpen job but is unlikely to pitch in high-leverage situations.

Ramirez was converted to a reliever last season after failing to develop as a starter. He has lacked a solid secondary pitch throughout his time in the minors, so a conversion to relief was inevitable. His fastball reaches the high-90s, but his 7.65 K/9IP at Triple-A last season says this isn't an overpowering reliever. Ramirez is still just 24 years old, so there is some time left to develop, but his window may be closing soon.

Ramirez really took a step back last season as he struggled all year to develop a consistent secondary offering. His strikeout rate dropped as the Phillies had him trying to pitch to contact. Ramirez has a big fastball that reaches the high-90s, but since he offers little else he struggles to put hitters away. The Phillies will convert him to a relief role this season in order to try to get something out of Ramirez.

Based on last year's numbers, Ramirez was the best prospect the Phillies obtained from the Mariners in the Cliff Lee trade. He was a combined 7-7 with a 4.82 ERA and a 115:41 K:BB ratio in 142 innings between High-A Clearwater and Double-A Reading. Ramirez put up those solid numbers despite pitching most of last season with a torn labrum in his hip. Ramirez underwent surgery in September and is expected to be fully healthy for the start of the 2011 season. He'll likely be back at Reading to start the year but could see time at Triple-A in the second half of the season if he gets off to a good start.

The Phillies acquired Ramirez in the trade that sent Cliff Lee to Seattle. Ramirez, 21, spent last season at High-A where he posted a 111:53 K:BB ratio in 142.1 innings. He struggled with the long ball and saw his K:9 ratio decrease from the year prior leaving some to question whether he is better suited for the bullpen long term. The Phillies like his upside and will keep him in the rotation for now. He could begin the year back at High-A.
