Jonathan Meloan

Meloan came over from the Dodgers in the Casey Blake trade and the Indians immediately moved him back into a relief role. After getting his brains beat in every fifth day in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, he turned things around at Triple-A in a relief role with the Indians. He still needs to work on his control, but offers a plus fastball and a slider that should serve him well in a relief role. He'll compete for a bullpen spot this spring but will likely start the season closing out games at Triple-A.

One of baseball's better relief prospects, Meloan had a huge year split between Double-A and Triple-A. Working as a closer, Meloan went 7-2 with a 2.03 ERA, 20 saves, and a 91:27 K:BB in 66.2 innings of work. He didn't fare quite as well with the Dodgers late in the year (11.05 ERA in five games), but look for Meloan to compete for a bullpen job this spring. A mid-90's fastball and plus slider give Meloan back-of-the-bullpen potential.

Meloan isn't quite as big as fellow Dodger reliever Jonathan Broxton, but he may be yet another power arm on the rise to keep an eye on. The main thing worth noting about Meloan is his off-the-charts strikeout rate (14.3 per nine innings since his 2005 debut). He has an outside shot at a bullpen job with an impressive spring, though he could also return to Double-A and try and make it as a starter, a role in which he would really be worth watching.
