Rest-of-Season Projections

Tanaka has asked for his release from the Triple-A Round Rock roster, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
After losing out on an Opening Day roster spot with the Rangers, Tanaka was banished to Round Rock, where he had been batting .258 with four homers and 12 stolen bases. It's unclear if he's inclined to pursue an opportunity with another organization, or simply return to Japan to continue his career.

2013 Fantasy Outlook
Even by NPB standards, Tanaka is a small ball player -- good defense, stolen bases, plate discipline, contact skills and sacrifice bunts, but no power. At his peak in Japan, Tanaka hit for a high average and was among the league leaders in stolen bases, but he missed time in each of the last two seasons with injuries and his numbers suffered. Still, he became an international free agent and signed a minor league deal with San Francisco. At this stage in his career, his upside is that of a utility infielder.
