Ziomek has retired from baseball, Emily Waldon of 2080 Baseball reports.
ANALYSIS
Ziomek missed the majority of 2016 recovering from thoracic outlet syndrome surgery, and it appears that ailment has led to his decision to call it quits. The 25-year-old owned a 3.07 ERA with 299 strikeouts across 290 minor-league innings (four seasons).

A 6-foot-3 lefty, Ziomek does not have overpowering stuff, but he knows how to sequence and locate his pitches, as illustrated by his 143:34 K:BB in 154.2 innings at High-A Lakeland last year. He has not posted an ERA or FIP above 3.50 in two years of full-season baseball, and his 2.38 FIP last season was a career best. Granted, Lakeland's home park favors pitchers, as does the Florida State League in general, but his track record of preventing runs is still pretty convincing. Perhaps the most impressive part of Ziomek’s profile is his ability to keep the ball in the park -- he has given up just eight home runs in 285.2 innings as a professional. A second-round pick in the 2013 draft, Ziomek now projects to be a viable No. 4 starter, perhaps by 2017.
While he has been overshadowed at times by fellow prospects Jonathon Crawford and Austin Kubitza, Ziomek was arguably the best pitcher the Tigers had in the lower levels of the minors last season. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound lefty went 10-6 with a 2.27 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 152:53 K:BB ratio in 123 innings for Low-A West Michigan in 2014. A 2013 second-round pick, Ziomek has a fastball in just the low-90s, but his slider is bordering on elite and he keeps hitters off-balance with a show-me curveball and a decent changeup. The 23-year-old southpaw will likely begin the season at High-A Lakeland, but he could move up the ladder quickly with another solid showing. If he continues to progress, Ziomek could make a push for a spot in the Tigers’ rotation as soon as 2016.
