Lazaro Montes

20-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Seattle Mariners AA
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Montes is a classic right field prospect, with a hulking 6-foot-3 frame, light tower power, a big arm and plenty of swing and miss. He turned 20 in October and is already listed at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, so there's a chance he may end up at first base or designated hitter in time. A lefty slugger, Montes struck out less than expected (19.1 K%) during a near-flawless run at Single-A Modesto and then his K-rate jumped to a more illustrative 29.6 percent while he slashed .260/.378/.427 with eight home runs in 51 games for High-A Everett. We can probably rule out the really high-end outcomes and retire the Yordan Alvarez comps, as Montes appears to be firmly power-over-hit, but he could still do enough damage to hit fourth or fifth in the lineup while providing more value in OBP leagues than batting average leagues. Moves up to Double-A
OFSeattle Mariners  AA
June 23, 2025
Montes has been promoted from High-A Everett to Double-A Arkansas, Adam Jude of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis
Montes earned the promotion after slashing .268/.387/.572 with 18 home runs in 67 games with Everett. The left-handed-batter did strike out at a 27.6 percent clip with Everett and also hit only .212/.307/.455 versus left-handed pitching, so he's not a finished product. However, Montes has some of the best power of any hitting prospect in baseball and will now get to test himself at the Double-A for the first time.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Montes, a high-pedigree, 6-foot-5 lefty slugger from Cuba who turned 19 this offseason, looks as promising as he could realistically look on paper and on video. The main reservation with pushing him all the way up prospect rankings is that his hit tool has not been tested by advanced pitching. He got off to a slow start in his first five games of Arizona Complex League action, but Montes hit .313/.445/.586 with 13 home runs, an 18.0 BB% and a 24.0 K% in 64 games across the ACL and Single-A. The Yordan Alvarez comps come naturally, given their nationality, tools and near identical bodies at the same age. Montes has explosive, violent bat speed that could produce 80-grade game power when it's all said and done. While he has always been at least 50 percent better than the average hitter in the leagues he has played in, Montes' strikeout rate has never been below 25 percent. He could finish the year as a top-10 fantasy prospect or outside the top 100, depending on how much contact he makes at High-A and Double-A.
Montes had a case to be the most sought-after J-15 international signee in dynasty leagues last year, due to his mammoth raw power and Seattle's strong track record of acquiring and developing players in this market. His bat immediately translated, as he hit 10 homers with a .301 ISO and .585 SLG in 55 games in the Dominican Summer League. Sometimes the lefty-hitting masher was swinging out of his shoes, as his zone-contact rate was subpar (per Prospects Live), as was his 33.2 K%. We need to be careful not to only dream on the positive and overlook his .421 BABIP and the elevated strikeout rate. That said, Montes has the pedigree and did so much damage in his pro debut that it's fair to be excited about what he might do this year in the Arizona Complex League. All it would take is for him to take a big step forward with his swing decisions and Montes would become one of the most exciting non-speed prospects in the game.
