Rest-of-Season Projections
2023 Fantasy Outlook
Garcia was solid in a utility role for the White Sox in 2021 with a .711 OPS, but his offense cratered last season with a .210/.233/.267 slash line in 97 games. He had a miniscule 2.3 percent walk rate and was one of the least valuable players in all of baseball with minus-1.1 fWAR. Garcia inked three-year, $16.5 million deal in November 2021 and is likely to open 2023 with a regular role given his solid defense and versatility to play all over the field, but he'll need to bounce back offensively in order to retain any semblance of playing time as the season unfolds. Even with an offensive rebound, the 90 wRC+ he had over the prior five seasons doesn't provide much of a reason for fantasy managers to give Garcia much consideration. Read Past Outlooks

The White Sox released Garcia on Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Chicago will eat the $11 million Garcia had remaining on his contract over the next two years. The veteran utility player should be able to land on his feet somewhere now that he can be had at the veteran minimum, though it's possible he'll have to spend some time in the minors first.

Garcia has proven valuable to MLB teams due to his ability to play adequate defense all over the field, as he logged at least 10 games at every position besides first base and catcher in 2021. Though he was rewarded with a three-year, $16.5 million contract, fantasy managers shouldn't confuse his real-life value with fantasy production. A combination of a 56 GB% and 3.3% barrel rate limited Garcia to only five home runs and an ISO of .108 in 2021. Despite an 84th percentile sprint speed, Garcia attempted only eight stolen bases last season -- his lowest mark of any campaign with over 100 plate appearances. The primary positive from Garcia's skillset was his 60 runs scored, though even that can be questioned heading into 2022 based on the fact that he maintained a career-high .335 OBP in 2021, and because he is almost certain to see the majority of his plate appearances in the bottom third of the lineup.
