Durango was assigned to the Royals' minor league camp Saturday, according to the Kansas City Star.
ANALYSIS
Durango has bounced around a few organizations lately and wasn't expected to make the cut anyway. His .154 average with three strikeouts over 13 at-bats wasn't exactly stating a case to stay either. He'll hang out at Triple-A Omaha for the year unless injuries completely decimate the Royals outfield and bench.

Durango has one skill, speed. At Triple-A Portland he got on base enough (.378 OBP) to showcase this skill (34 steals), but when given a taste of playing time at the major league level, this wasn't the case (.308 OBP). His walk rate has been in a steady decline for a couple seasons now, which does not bode well for his future fantasy value. Should he find himself in a starting role with the Padres, he'd be a great source of cheap speed in 2011, but their outfield is crowded and he's probably best suited as a reserve role where he'll start occasionally and work primarily as a pinch-runner.
The Panamanian Jason Tyner, Durango runs and draws walks and at 145 pounds has less power than Dmitry Medvedev. Like Tyner and other players of this ilk, Durango will struggle to have a high enough OBP to be a regular in the majors; pitchers can simply knock the bat out of his hands in the majors. He'll have roster value and perhaps even NL-only value as a high-frequency pinch-runner, but will never play regularly in the majors.
