Sardinas was acquired by the Padres in August and was quickly added to the team's 25-man roster as the organization went through the process of evaluating pieces for the future in the final weeks of the season. At a glance, Sardinas' 66-game body of work in the big leagues last season offers little to get excited about, but his value to big league clubs comes from his above-average defensive work around the infield. Sardinas appears to be the favorite to hold down the starting shortstop job in the short term, as the Padres are essentially punting the position in 2017, with Jose Rondon serving as his closest competition. Turning 24 in May, Sardinas isn't necessarily a finished product as a hitter, but his .278/.313/.348 career line at Triple-A is nothing to write home about. Still, he is a solid bet to provide double-digit steals with a batting average that won't kill fantasy teams, likely from the bottom third of the batting order.
