Back from injured list
PWashington Nationals
July 5, 2025
The Nationals reinstated Thompson (elbow) from the injured list Saturday.
Analysis
Thompson has spent the entire season working his way back from a Tommy John procedure he underwent in March 2024. He gave up six earned runs over eight frames during his rehab assignment, though he threw 1.1 scoreless innings at Triple-A Rochester. Now fully healthy, he'll replace Zach Brzykcy in Washington's bullpen and take Derek Law's (forearm) place on the 40-man.

2017 Fantasy Outlook
Tommy John surgery in his junior year of high school dropped Thompson to the third round of the 2016 first-year player draft, when the Padres took a gamble on the 19-year-old and swayed him from a Texas commitment with $1.75 million. Thompson has some work to do to fill out his 6-foot-7, 186-pound frame, but he has the stuff to succeed if he can do so. He posts good velocity and has some decent backup pitches, which he showed off in 12 innings for the Padres' rookie league team in the Arizona League. Thompson struck out 12 batters in his five starts, allowing just eight hits en route to a 2.25 ERA and 1.08 WHIP. He'll begin next season in a low minor league level, but the Padres will have high hopes for his success if he can stay healthy and begin to add more strength.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Out of high-leverage mix?
PWashington Nationals
May 23, 2023
Thompson delivered a scoreless inning during Tuesday's 7-4 loss to San Diego, but Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com speculated the right-hander is no longer a trusted high-leverage option for manager Dave Martinez.
Analysis
Thompson's entered Tuesday's contest having been scored upon in each of his previous five outings, so it's not a major surprise he's fallen out of favor a bit. The 25-year-old had a 1.80 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 19:1 K:BB across his first 20 innings of the season, and a return to that form could see him once again become a high-leverage option, though he's unlikely to be in the mix for saves without multiple injuries within the Nationals bullpen.
