2025 Fantasy Outlook
Liberatore has been unable to find his footing in a starting role. He was handed six starts by the Cardinals last season and produced a 6.35 ERA, pushing his mark in 24 career starts at the big-league level to 5.86, along with an unsightly 17.4 percent strikeout rate and 10 percent walk rate. The left-hander's stuff has played up in shorter stints, however, and when he was used exclusively in relief from August on he posted a 2.67 ERA, 25 percent strikeout rate and six percent walk rate. Even if Liberatore has found his niche as a reliever, his persistent issues versus right-handed batters (career .878 OPS, .823 OPS in 2024) could prevent an ascension to an eighth- or ninth-inning role. Trouble maintaining velocity
Liberatore has had difficulty maintaining his velocity deep into starts, most recently seeing his four-seamer drop to 90-to-91 mph in the fifth inning of Tuesday's loss to the Rockies, Katie Woo of The Athletic reports.
Analysis
Liberatore set down the first nine batters he faced Tuesday. However, his velocity began to slip in the fourth -- when he served up a two-run homer to Hunter Goodman -- and declined further in the fifth before he was pulled after allowing the first two runners of that frame to reach base. Liberatore has a 5.47 ERA and 12:11 K:BB over 24.2 innings since the start of July and hasn't recorded an out beyond the fifth inning in any of those outings. The lefty could be wearing down as he goes through his first full season as a starter at the major-league level. Liberatore will make his next scheduled start Monday in Miami, but if he struggles again, the Cardinals will consider altering his role. One option is to piggyback him with Kyle Leahy.

A little buzz was reignited with Liberatore after he got off to a nice start last season at Triple-A Memphis while showing increased velocity. That carried over into an impressive first start back with the Cardinals in mid-May, but the momentum quickly halted and Liberatore wound up spending time back in minors and also missing some action with a back issue. The lefty returned as a reliever in September and showed an aptitude for that role with a 1.54 ERA and 11:4 K:BB over 11.2 innings. St. Louis will stretch the 24-year-old back out in spring training, but his best shot to impact the major-league club in 2024 could be as a reliever. It doesn't seem like a situation ripe with fantasy potential.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Excelling in relief
Liberatore has a 3.69 ERA in 51 appearances as a reliever this season and has mostly stopped utilizing his curveball and changeup, reports Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat.
Analysis
The left-hander threw his curveball just over 20 percent of the time in his first two MLB campaign, and that usage has dropped to 6.4 percent in 2024. Liberatore never relied on his changeup to that extent, but that usage has also dipped to 4.5 percent. The 24-year-old's shift to a full-time relief role has allowed him to focus on utilizing his best offerings, and he's been especially effective since the start of August with a 2.57 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 29:7 K:BB across 28 innings.
