Sierra cleared waivers Tuesday and was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse, Jorge Castillo of The Washington Post reports.

ANALYSIS
Sierra had an unimpressive showing as a reserve outfielder for the Nationals this season, posting a .167/.217/.204 line in 60 plate appearances. He was jettisoned from the roster in order to clear space for 19-year-old phenom Juan Soto. Sierra could be back in a bench role throughout the season, but nothing in his track record suggests he'll have much fantasy relevance even if he ends up with a surprising amount of playing time.

The White Sox picked up Sierra off waivers in May, and he served as one of the team's primary reserve outfielders for much of the year. He appeared as a defensive replacement (55 games) more times than he started (41), and never did enough with the bat to earn more playing time. The Royals claimed Sierra off waivers in the offseason and will likely give him a chance to contend for a backup role in camp.

Sierra had an interesting 2013 season, as he struggled at the Triple-A level (.261/.309/.422 in 412 plate appearances) but produced a .290/.369/.458 line over 122 major league plate appearances. While he isn't a great prospect, Sierra does have a solid minor league track record, and he'll likely compete for a reserve outfield spot in spring training.

Sierra isn't considered an elite prospect for the Blue Jays, but for a second straight season put up good numbers in their minor league system. Once in Toronto, he showed flashes of power but also a lack of ability to make contact. Sierra struck out 44 times in 147 at-bats, and is likely headed to Triple-A Buffalo with the Jays' flurry of offseason additions.

Sierra began to translate his raw athletic talents into baseball skills with his best season as a pro at Double-A New Hampshire (.277/.342/.436 with 18 homers). It wasn't a breakout season by any stretch, but it was at least a step forward for the 23-year-old. Expect him to start the season at Double-A again as he still needs to do a better job of controlling the strike zone.
