2016 Fantasy Outlook
Do not be fooled by Smith’s numbers at Double-A. After putting up a 2.89 ERA in 62.1 innings in the Texas League in 2014, he returned to post a 2.48 ERA in 101.2 innings with Double-A Arkansas, before getting exposed after a promotion to Triple-A. The 6-foot-3 lefty had a 7.75 ERA and just 23 strikeouts in 36 innings with Triple-A Salt Lake, and while he isn’t as bad as those numbers indicate, he is not much more than a No. 5 starter if everything breaks right. Smith should start 2016 back in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League, and could serve as a swingman in the big league rotation this summer, but he will likely end up in the bullpen long term.
