The lefty remained extremely effective on the baseball field at age 38/39 in 2020, recording a 2.00 ERA over 21 appearances for Cleveland. His season will probably always be remembered for one thing in particular; ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that Perez threatened to leave the team if Mike Clevinger and Zach Plesac rejoined the club in Detroit following the starters' violations of COVID protocols. While Perez's velocity was down and his strikeout rate dipped eight percentage points to 19.4%, he attacks lefties and can still induce weak contact with his heavy sinker-slider approach. Perez's agent, Scott Boras, told MLB Network insider Jon Heyman in January of 2021 that Perez intends to continue his playing career. He's a throwback, rubber-armed southpaw, but one with five saves in 690 career appearances.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

Threatened opt out
Perez reportedly threatened to leave the Indians and opt out of the 2020 season during a team meeting held Friday before Cleveland's series with Detroit, sources told Jeff Passan of ESPN.com.
Analysis
The Indians held the meeting a few days after starting pitchers Zach Plesac and Mike Clevinger broke MLB's COVID-19 protocols by going out in Chicago on the night of Aug. 7. According to those familiar with the meeting, the 39-year-old Perez suggested he would opt out of the season if Plesac and Clevinger -- who were placed on the restricted list and later optioned to the team's alternate training site -- remained on the active roster. Plesac and Clevinger will spend at least 10 days away from the team after being optioned to the alternate site, so Perez will have some time to decide whether he wants to stick around with Cleveland once the two starters are eventually recalled. Perez has been one of the team's top relievers thus far, giving up one run on three hits and one walk over eight innings while notching a save and a hold.
