Signs minor league deal with Marlins
Cabrera signed a minor league deal with the Marlins on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training, MLB.com's Joe Frisaro reports.
ANALYSIS
The 27-year-old backstop spent the last two seasons with the Reds, but was non-tendered this offseason. He figures to be fourth on the depth chart at catcher this spring, and is likely to spend the season offering organizational depth at Triple-A.

Following an injury to starter Devin Mesoraco, the window opened for Cabrera to stay on the major league roster as the backup option behind Tucker Barnhart, and the 27-year-old wound up appearing in 61 games for Cincinnati. He never profiled as a particularly flashy hitter in the minors, as his biggest strength had always been his plate discipline -- something that abandoned him in 2016 as he drew just eight walks against 30 strikeouts in 185 plate appearances. With Mesoraco and Barnhart both set to return in 2017, there wasn't much room for Cabrera on the roster and he became a free agent after the Reds declined to tender him a contract. Now a member of the Marlins, he still seems to be fourth in the pecking order for catching opportunities in Miami, leaving him to spend another season in an organizational depth role.
