Past Fantasy Outlooks

The Rockies have done all they can to spin Pint's first year in full-season ball. They've pointed out that he has a big arm in a young kid's body and that they are not trying to develop a No. 1 starter at Low-A, they are trying to develop a No. 1 starter for the majors. That's all fair, but there is no denying that the command/control is eons away from being big-league caliber. His fastball remains an upper-90s beast, but his lack of command made it tough for him to pitch off his heater last year in the Sally League. He commands his changeup better than his other secondaries, but his curveball is the secondary pitch with the most upside. He has the size (6-foot-4, 195 pounds) that we look for in starting pitching prospects, and he will continue to fill out. Even if he reaches his ceiling as a frontline arm, it will be a slow burn that will test the patience of his owners. Meanwhile, his floor is incredibly low.
The Rockies used the No. 4 pick in June to land Pint, a prep arm with a highly projectable 6-foot-4 frame. He's not all projection, though, as he already throws his fastball in the high-90s and mixes in two borderline plus secondary pitches, most notably his wipeout slider, which could give him two plus-plus offerings (along with his fastball) in time. Locating those pitches with consistency is an issue, as evidenced by Pint's 5.6 BB/9 rate in his professional debut, and figuring it out may take some time. Of course, there's the fact that his eventual home park in Colorado is a pitcher's nightmare, but Pint has shown an ability to keep the ball on the ground with his offspeed and breaking pitches. The combination of strikeout ability and heavy groundball tendencies could allow the 19-year-old to buck the trend and become one of the rare Coors Field success stories. But again: patience required.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Addition to 40-man roster uncertain
PColorado Rockies
October 25, 2020
The Rockies haven't yet decided whether to add Pint to the 40-man roster during the offseason, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Pint was selected in the first round of the 2016 first-year player draft, but he's had lackluster results in his first several minor-league seasons. He'll be eligible for the Rule 5 draft if he isn't added to the 40-man roster during the offseason. While he's reportedly made improvements in recent seasons, it's unclear whether the Rockies will deem his progress sufficient enough to give him a spot on the 40-man roster.
