Manuel came to the Mariners in a midseason trade with the Reds last year before being claimed off waivers by the Red Sox this offseason. Manuel is a decent reliever who had a big 2008 with 92 strikeouts in 77 innings at Double-A, but his strikeout rate did not hold up at Triple-A last year. He had a cup of coffee with the Reds and could get a shot to pitch out of Boston's bullpen in 2010.

It turns out that the Sean Casey for David Williams trade wasn't a complete wash for the Reds, at least not yet. They received Manuel from the Mets in 2006 for Williams, and Manuel has developed into a credible relief prospect. Of course, the very term "relief prospect" inspires doubt, but Manuel struck out 103 batters in 86.2 combined innings in the minors last season, and followed that up with 13.2 innings in the Arizona Fall League with a 13:1 K:BB and 1.98 ERA. He'll start 2009 at Triple-A Louisville.
