Mitchell agreed to a minor league contract with the Rockies on Saturday.

ANALYSIS
As a 27-year-old at Double-A Richmond in the Giants' organization, Mitchell batted .207/.333/.321 in 140 at-bats. His non-prospect status and struggles at Double-A put him well off the radar for a major league job with the Rockies this season, and likely beyond.

Mitchell is nearing Quad-A status if he hasn't reached it already. Mitchell has posted OPS marks of .898 and .875 the past two seasons for Triple-A Albuquerque, but he hasn't translated Triple-A success to big league playing time, having netted just 93 sub-.200 average at-bats since 2010. Mitchell underwent wrist surgery in September and will need a huge spring to have any sort of chance at cracking the big league roster.

With Russell Martin's departure, Mitchell immediately becomes the best "Russ M." in the system. All kidding aside, Mitchell had a bit of a breakout in 2010, batting .315/.363/.535 with 23 home runs and 38 doubles for Triple-A Albuquerque. He was just 6-for-42 with the Dodgers (two homers), but his 1.164 Triple-A OPS versus southpaws may get him on the 25-man roster in 2011. In that role, he would spell James Loney and Casey Blake at the corners. Mitchell has some talent, but it would take an injury for him to find his way onto many fantasy rosters.
