O'Rourke announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he has retired from professional baseball.

O'Rourke accepted a volunteer assistant position with the baseball program at the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts back in February, which seemingly foreshadowed his retirement. Though the COVID-19 pandemic freed him of his coaching obligations, O'Rourke made it clear Monday that he won't look to resume his playing career, which included major-league stops with the Twins (in 2015 and 2016) and the Mets (in 2019). Between those three seasons, the 32-year-old lefty reliever posted a 4.84 ERA and 49:28 over 48.1 innings spanning 56 appearances.

After struggling in his first trip to the majors last year, O'Rourke returned to Triple-A Rochester and improved with a 1.93 ERA and 9.3 K/9 along with outstanding control (1.9 BB/9). He stuck with the Twins after being called up for a second time in August and had a decent 3.96 ERA and 8.6 K/9 despite a 89.7 mph average fastball. He was especially tough on lefties with a .359 OPS allowed to left-handed batters. O'Rourke should compete for a bullpen spot this spring and could carve out a steady major league role as a lefty specialist.

O'Rourke was a surprise callup to the majors in July after posting a 5.40 ERA at Triple-A. However, the Twins were desperate for a reliever who could get lefties out and O'Rourke had a 18:5 K:BB ratio in 7.1 innings against left-handed hitters in Triple-A. His dominance against lefties continued in the majors with a .560 OPS allowed. Unfortunately, he was terrible against right-handed hitters with a 11.30 ERA and a 5:8 K:BB ratio in 10.1 innings. O'Rourke will compete for a bullpen role again this spring, but his upside looks limited given his low velocity (90.6 mph average fastball) and struggles against right-handed batters.
