ANALYSIS
Jones spent last season at Triple-A Charlotte in the White Sox organization, managing just a .586 OPS with seven homers over 67 games while splitting most of his time between the two corner-infield spots. The 28-year-old hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2018, and with his offensive production having trended downward in the minors in recent seasons, Jones announced Dec. 31 via his personal Instagram account that he intends to transition to full-time pitching in 2023. He tossed one scoreless inning of mop-up duty at Triple-A last season.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
It appeared Jones was in line for a decent look in September with the Giants well out of postseason contention and with Brandon Belt banged up. However, his audition was cut short, with his season ending prematurely due to a left knee patella dislocation. He had surgery not only to repair the patella, but also to relieve tendinitis in that same knee. The plan was for him to resume hitting off a tee and fielding grounders by Christmas. During his time at Triple-A Sacramento, Jones hit .290/.334/.442 against right-handed pitching but his overall numbers were disappointing given the environment and the fact that he crushed it in his first taste of that level in 2017 -- his ISO crashed from .262 to .143 and his wRC+ fell from 148 to 93. Given he's limited to the infield corners, defensively, Jones will be a tough sell for a bench spot out of camp.
Drafted in the second round of the 2013 draft, Jones trudged his way through the minors with very limited offensive success over the last four years before opening the 2017 campaign with Triple-A Sacramento. Just as his prospect flame was beginning to fizzle out, Jones finally found his footing at the plate, slashing an impressive .312/.396/.574 and earning himself a call to the big leagues in late June. The 23-year-old became the everyday third baseman upon his promotion, but seemed overmatched at the highest level. He missed some time with a wrist injury and closed the year with a .173 average and a concerning 31.6 percent strikeout rate in his 164 plate appearances. With the Giants bringing in Evan Longoria in the offseason, Jones seems likely to start the year back on the farm.
