                2025 Fantasy Outlook

Alcantara spent the year rehabbing from Tommy John surgery undergone in October 2023. The timing of the procedure limited the right-hander to bullpen sessions, though he began to face live hitters in mid-September. All the progress reports were encouraging, but when he takes the hill in the Grapefruit League, it will be more than16 months since Alcantara threw a ball in anger. Typically, the exercises involved in Tommy John rehab strengthen the area, allowing the pitcher to match, and often add, velocity. The concern is always command and control, which were Alcantara's main assets before the injury. Even with a 98-mph fastball, Alcantara's strikeout rate was above average, but not elite. Workload will also be an issue. Rostering Alcantara is a matter of risk tolerance and level of reliance. It's best to treat him as a luxury item and not a staff fixture. Second-half surge continues in win
Alcantara (11-12) earned the win Friday against the Mets, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk in six innings. He struck out three.
                  Analysis
It might have been too little too late for the Marlins' playoff aspirations, but Alcanatara really rediscovered his ace form for fantasy managers following the All-Star break. Friday was his eighth quality start in 13 outings since mid-July, a stretch in which the right-hander submitted a 3.33 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 71:20 K:BB across his last 83.2 frames to improve his ERA from 7.22 entering the break to 5.36 to end the year. Although he struggled mightily during the first half, Alcantara's second-half surge certainly raised his stock significantly both in real life and in fantasy ahead of the offseason.

Alcantara endured a down 2023 campaign with a 4.14 ERA in 28 starts before going down with a UCL sprain in early September, and he underwent Tommy John surgery a month later. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner will in all likelihood be sidelined until 2025 given the elbow procedure's typical 12-to-18 month recovery timeline.

Latest Fantasy Rumors

                  Candidate for trade?
Executives around the league view Alcantara as one of the most likely players to be traded during the offseason, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
                  Analysis
Alcantara was heavily linked with a move away from the Marlins before this year's deadline, but Miami didn't accept any offers and opted to hang on to their star pitcher. Don't expect that to happen in the offseason, though. Alcantara improved as the 2025 campaign went on and posted a 3.33 ERA after the All-Star break while logging 174.2 regular-season innings. He'll be another year removed from Tommy John surgery in 2026, and given that he's under control for two more seasons, the Marlins can field proposals for Alcantara without being pressed to part ways with him in the coming months.
