Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
Heineman played 25 games in 2019 and 24 games in 2020 without breaking through in a meaningful way at the big-league level. He logged excellent statistics on his climb through the minors, but he was old for every level he played at and still needed repeat tours to fully master Double-A in 2018 and Triple-A in 2019, so it seems pretty clear that he is a Quad-A hitter entering his age-28 season. That didn't stop the Reds from adding him to the 40-man roster via a low-level trade after he was designated for assignment by Texas this winter. However, while he is on the 40-man roster at press time, that may not be the case on Opening Day. Even if he sticks around, he will be fringe roster depth, likely only starting occasionally against left-handed starters. He can play all three outfield spots in addition to first base.
Heineman was promoted to the big leagues for the first time in 2019 after tearing up Triple-A pitching to the tune of a .340 average. He didn't fare nearly as well during his initial campaign in the majors, slashing .213/.306/.373 in 85 plate appearances. However, the tepid average was due in part to a paltry .264 BABIP, and it's logical to expect Heineman's numbers to come up with continued chances at the big-league level as he wielded a solid bat throughout his time in the minors, posting a career .303 average in 411 games. While the 27-year-old doesn't have awe-inspiring power, he reached double-digit home runs in all but one of his minor-league seasons and can impact the game with his speed, notching as many as 30 steals in a season. Heineman isn't guaranteed a major-league roster spot in 2020 and is unlikely to challenge for a starting gig, but he could carve out consistent at-bats in a reserve role.
