Lee signed a one-year, 150 million yen contract with the Orix Buffaloes, the Kyodo news service reports.
ANALYSIS
Lee hit just .163 with five homers and 11 RBIs in 56 games last season. He'll turn just 35 next season, but the odds seem long that the South Korean will play in the U.S.

Lee, who was Korea's big slugging star at the 2006 WBC, hit .274/.322/.501 with 30 homers in 137 games for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan last season. Those are nice numbers, but that's a big dropoff from 2006, as Lee lost 181 points' worth of OPS from the previous season thanks to a thumb injury that required surgery in October. Lee likely will miss the first two months of the 2008 season as a result. Lee is signed with Yomiuri through 2010, but his contract has an opt-out clause that allows him to leave Yomiuri and sign with an MLB club after any season where the Giants win the Japan Series. That didn't happen this winter, as the Giants lost in the LCS phase. However, if Lee comes back healthy and helps Yomiuri win it all, he needs to be on your radar screen for 2009.
Lee was Korea's best player at the WBC last year (8-for-24, five HR) and had another big year in Japan as well (.323/.389/.615, 41 HR, 108 RBI in 143 games). Yomiuri signed him to a four-year, $25 million contract in November, with one huge out clause: in any year that Yomiuri wins the Japan Series, Lee is free to break his contract and sign a deal with an MLB team. Those in keeper leagues should keep tabs on the standings in Japan this summer, because if Lee's team wins it all, he could easily become a first baseman or DH with big power potential somewhere in the majors in 2008.
Known as the Lion King in his native land, the young Korean broke the Asian home run record in 2003 by hitting 56 home runs for the Samsung Lions of the Korean League. If ever there was just cause for an asterisk, this would be it. The previous record, held for 39 years by the legendary Sadaharu Oh, was set in the Japanese League, a much higher level of competition. It was thought Lee would be coming to the majors in 2004, but he was dissatisfied with offers made by both the Dodgers and Angels, and opted to sign a more lucrative two-year deal with Lotte Marines of Japan's Pacific League.
