ANALYSIS
A 2015 first-round pick, Jay is now on the outs with his second organization after Cincinnati acquired him from the Twins last June. After coming over via trade, Jay reported to Double-A Chattanooga and didn't distinguish himself in any major way, posting a 3.03 ERA, 1.43 ERA and 33:12 K:BB in 32.2 innings out of the bullpen.

Jay, Minnesota's 2015 first-round draft pick, was moved to the rotation from the bullpen last year with strong signs of success. He had a 2.84 ERA and 68:21 K:BB in 69.2 innings over 13 starts at High-A Fort Myers. The 6-foot-1 righty didn't fare as well at Double-A after moving to the bullpen to reduce his workload, and his season ended in August with a shoulder and neck injury. The shoulder injury, along with his slight frame and high-effort delivery, raise doubts about his ability to remain a starter as he moves up the ladder. However, given where the Twins drafted him, they will likely continue to groom him for the rotation. If his shoulder doesn't remain an issue, his workload could bump up to around 140-150 innings in 2017. His plus fastball and plus slider are ready to get big league hitters out right now, so he has a nice floor as a high-leverage reliever if he can't hack it as a starter.
Jay, Minnesota's 2015 first-round draft pick, was a dominant reliever during his three-year stint at the University of Illinois. Despite his initial pro success in relief, the Twins plan to move him to the rotation during spring training. Jay mixes a 93-95 mph fastball with a plus slider, curveball, and occasional changeup, offering a deep enough arsenal to become a starter. At 6-foot-1, 175 pounds, he lacks the physical stature that teams typically seek in starting pitchers, but he will likely get a very long look in that role.
