Zambrano is officially a free agent.
ANALYSIS
He was actually considered for a temporary rotation spot with the Yankees late last season, so Zambrano should be able to wrangle a non-roster invite to spring training somewhere this winter.

Zambrano, already on thin ice with Mets management and fans, got a late start to the season with a left hamstring strain and then struggled in his three starts after returning before needing Tommy John surgery in May that ended his year. The damage in his elbow was so severe, he might need 12 to 18 months to recover, and that timeframe, combined with his $2.4 million arbitration price tag, forced the team to not tender him a contract. New York still might sign him, and Zambrano, who hopes to be ready in April, wants to return and will pitch in relief to return quicker from the surgery.
