Announces retirement
Davis announced his retirement from baseball Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Davis served mainly as a starter across his first five major-league seasons before transitioned to the bullpen. He found his most success as a closer or late-inning arm, accruing a 63-55 record, 155 saves and 3.94 ERA across 13 seasons in the majors with the Rays, Royals, Cubs and Rockies. Davis was named an All-Star three times during his career, and he captured his lone World Series ring with Kansas City in 2015.

Davis' sharp decline continued as he followed a subpar 2019 with an even poorer abbreviated 2020 campaign. His recent results, advanced age and a deterioration of skill combine to make a projected return to fantasy relevance doubtful. Disastrously, Davis has shown a complete inability to throw strikes and keep the ball in the yard. Across his last 47 innings spanning the 2019 and 2020 campaigns, the right-hander has issued 32 free passes and served up 10 home runs. Add in tumbling velocity, and it's little surprise that the Rockies released Davis at the close of the 2020 season. At the age of 35, he signed a minor-league deal to return to Kansas City, where his rebirth as a reliever began in 2014. It's been a precipitous fall for a pitcher who was once one of the game's best closers, and a third act to his career seems unlikely.
