After making 28 starts with a 5.90 ERA and 1.61 WHIP over the previous two seasons, Crowe shifted to a multi-inning relief role and changed his pitch mix. The right-hander threw fewer sinkers and fastballs in favor of more sliders and changeups, which helped him to a 3.31 ERA and 1.20 WHIP over 51.2 first-half innings. He doubled that ERA in the second half, though, and Crowe was one of three relievers with 10 or more losses. The 28-year-old managed six wins, four saves and 16 holds, but his save chances were sporadic and his walk and strikeout rates were below average. Despite his less-than-stellar results, Crowe is still one of Pittsburgh's better relievers and figures to have the same mid-to-high leverage role in 2023. Read Past Outlooks

Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk saidWednesday that Crowe received a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right shoulder two weeks ago, and the right-hander is halfway through four weeks of not throwing, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Crowe is currently on the 60-day injured list because of his shoulder issues and isn't eligible to return to the Pittsburgh pitching staff until the end of June. The right-hander will likely be an option in the middle to late innings whenever he's ready to make his return.

Crowe simply wasn't effective in any of his three starts during the 2020 campaign, allowing 11 runs over 8.1 innings (11.88 ERA). He walked just as many batters as he struck out (eight) and was hit with two losses as a result. To be fair, this was the right-hander's first big-league experience, but he'll need to show improvement quickly to remain in the majors. Crowe was traded from the Nationals to the Pirates after the 2020 season, where he should have a better chance of carving out a relief role. The 26-year-old figures to sit near the front end of the bullpen to kick off the season, but could unquestionably earn mid-to-high-leverage chances amongst a group of unproven bullpen arms.
