2003 Fantasy Outlook
Smith's bat has made him one of Florida's top hitting prospects. The sixth round pick set the Arizona high school record for home runs, and scouts insist he's developing major league power. He has an unorthodox stance but gets the bat through the hitting zone cleanly. His arm is not considered major league caliber so his likely position will be left field. He'll never be a Gold Glove candidate, thus his power will need to continue to develop. He's shown the ability to hit the lower minors, and his likely level for 2003 will be Double-A. The Marlins rarely use their Triple-A team for prospect development so his stay in Carolina could extend through 2004. While he projects to have 25 home run power, he'll need to become more disciplined to achieve this height in the majors.
