2023 Fantasy Outlook
Almonte had a career 5.30 ERA and was coming off a 7.55 mark in 2021 when the Rockies cut him loose. He landed with the Dodgers on a minor-league contract and, as the organization has done with many others, figured out what worked for Almonte and watched him turn in a 1.02 ERA over 33 relief appearances. In Almonte's case, it was using more sinkers than four-seamers and, most importantly, upping the usage of his slider, a pitch which garnered a robust 48.5 percent whiff rate. Almonte did deal with an elbow injury in the second half, although he returned late in the year to make four scoreless appearances. The 28-year-old picked up one save in 2022 and it wouldn't be a surprise if he gets more than that in 2023 with the back-end of the Dodgers' bullpen unsettled. Read Past Outlooks

Avoids arbitration with LAD
Almonte signed a one-year, $1.9 million contract with the Dodgers on Friday, avoiding arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Almonte regressed last season following his dominant first year with the Dodgers in 2022, but $1.9 million is a drop in the bucket for Los Angeles. He should be part of the Opening Day bullpen mix in 2024.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2017
Almonte struggled in 2019 with a 5.56 ERA, but the right-hander turned things around in 2020. He posted a 2.93 ERA, along with a 4.18 xFIP and 3.74 SIERA, all of which greatly improved from the year before. Almonte was much better at limiting meaningful contact, as he had a better groundball rate in 2020 (56.3%) compared to 2019 (32.1%). He also had a hard-hit rate of 37.0% and an above-average 3.9% barrel rate. Almonte's average fastball velocity dipped to 94.8 mph in 2020, and he became more reliant on his off-speed pitches. Even with the changes in his pitch selection, he saw a slight increase to a 20.4 K%, and his BB% improved from 8.9% in 2019 to 5.3% in 2020. He was used in some late-game situations, converting on one of his three save chances while recording three holds. Almonte could be used as a setup man in 2021, but he's unlikely to be a significant contender for the closer's role.
