Abdur-Rahim announced his retirement Monday.
ANALYSIS
Abdur-Rahim missed most of last season battling a right knee injury and eventually underwent two surgeries to remove bone spurs and joint lining last December. His rehab had stalled and he felt that he would not be able to fully recover by the time preseason came around, so he decided he needed to retire. “I came to grips with the fact that, health-wise, I won’t be able to get back to the condition and level that is needed to play in the NBA," he said.

Abdur-Rahim will need to compete for meaningful playing time. Due to balky knees (he had knee surgery in August), his minutes must be limited. In his prime, he was a smooth scorer, averaging more than 20 points per game in six of his first eight seasons. Now at 31, he’s merely an offensive contributor off the bench. He was fourth on the team in scoring at 9.9 points and averaged five rebounds, but offers little else to the fantasy world other than a decent field goal percentage (47.2 percent). Defensively, he’s slow-footed, making the active Williams a threat to steal minutes.
Abdur-Rahim used to be an upper-round draft pick due to his ability to average 20/10 with great shooting percentages, but in recent years he has lost his starting job which has led to fewer minutes. This has exposed Abdur-Rahim’s lack of all-around fantasy production, because while one could live with his lack of defensive contributions or assists when getting 20/10, it’s a lot harder to swallow a lack of all-around game for the 10/5 he averaged once he lost his starting job to Kenny Thomas. Unless Abdur-Rahim can earn his minutes back, he will remain a fantasy afterthought that isn’t really strong in any category.
Buyer beware: scar tissue in his knee caused Abdur-Rahim to fail a physical with the Nets, no matter what his agent or his new team, the Kings, might say to the contrary. It's tough to know how much of Abdur-Rahim's sub-par 2004-05 season should be chalked up to injury, to the dysfunctional Blazers lineup or to general loss of effectiveness, but it's difficult to expect him to be the 20/10 guy he'd been earlier in his career with Vancouver and Atlanta. With Mike Bibby, Peja Stojakovic, and Brad Miller around, Abdur-Rahim has the best chance he's ever had to go far in the playoffs, but team success could come at the expense of Abdur-Rahim's fantasy numbers.
In a perfect world, 'Reef would have been shipped to the Nets to replace Kenyon Martin where he'd spend the second half of this season on the receiving end of sweet dishes for J-Kidd, and he'd easily rank in the top 15 on this list. Unfortunately, at press time he's still stuck behind Zach Randolph on the Blazers' depth chart. This could shake out a number of ways. 1) Randolph could get traded. 2) Abdur-Rahim could get traded. 3) Neither of them could get traded, and 'Reef could get stuck playing backup, or playing out-of-position. If one or two comes to pass, draft this guy - he has a ton of talent.
Abdur-Rahim will start at power forward and put up solid numbers. With fewer scoring options on the Hawks this season, he could see his shots increase.
