May dropped some weight and has been working out regularly in preparation for a return to the lineup in 200-. He underwent microfracture surgery last October to correct a chronic bone problem, that’s limited him to just 58 games in three seasons. If healthy, he gives Charlotte a desperately needed big man in the front court rotation. He’s got a soft touch around the rim, is a good rebounder and has the same North Carolina basketball roots of coach Larry Brown. Monitor him in training camp for a possible late-round reserve flier.

The UNC product averaged 11.9 points and 6.7 rebounds in a little less than 24 minutes in 2006, while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 76.8 percent from the line. He's not tall for a low-post player (6-8), but he's big (260 pounds) and strong with soft hands and can handle the ball and pass it as well. He can play any of the three frontcourt spots, but figures to play the 4 when Okafor rotates into the center spot. Unfortunately, he's played only 58 games in two seasons and will miss the 2006-07 season after undergoing knee surgery in October.

May is expected to be the first big man off the Bobcat bench. He is a good rebounder, but must increase his range to be an effective scorer. Questions remain about his health as he had two knee surgeries last season. May was very effective in the summer league averaging 18.6ppg on 60.5% shooting. If his knees can hold up, and he can continue to make perimeter shots, look for May to be a solid contributor for the Bobcats.

Why the Bobcats chose May with this pick is a head-scratcher. With Okafor, Brezec and Ely on the roster, where May fits in is a question mark. If there's any consolation for fantasy owners who had plans on taking May, if he can rebound at the pro level, he has more than a good chance of stealing minutes from Ely. But he's nowhere near worth an early pick.
