The Timberwolves waived Wells on Friday, Jerry Zgoda of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.
ANALYSIS
The Wolves needed to trim their roster to 15, and Wells was an easy cut given their depth at the guard spot. He could catch on elsewhere to serve as backcourt depth.

Wells barely got any run last season after missing most of training camp with personal problems, dental issues and an injured groin. Coach Jeff Van Gundy never seemed to warm up to him after that, but to Wells' credit he never became a major distraction to the team. With his old coach Rick Adelman, now in Houston, Wells has a chance to be a significant part of the team's rotation and supply double-digit scoring and exceptional rebounding from the guard position (Wells averaged 7.7 rpg in 32 minutes with the Kings two years ago). Wells can create his own shot and occasionally knock down a three, but his real strength is in the post where he can push around smaller, less physical guards.
Wells will come off the bench and provide the Rockets with a much-needed third scoring option. Wells is also an outstanding rebounder for a guard, averaging 7.7 per game in 32 minutes a year ago. Wells will shoot the three (though not always with great accuracy), but he's deadly in the post where he can abuse smaller guards. For all his talents, Wells has been a bit of a head case going back to his days in Portland, so it remains to be seen how well he'll mesh with disciplinarian and defense-first coach Jeff Van Gundy.
After an injury-filled, unhappy final year in Memphis, Wells gets a fresh start for a Kings team that could really use his scoring ability and toughness. A stocky 6-5, Wells is one of the best post-up shooting guards in the NBA. With the Kings featuring four other starters that play primarily in the midrange and on the perimeter, Wells should have some room inside to score in his office. While his numbers last season were modest at best (10.4 points, 3.3. rebounds, 1.2 steals in 21.6 minutes per) his numbers this season should increase back into the 16-point, five-rebound, 1.5-steal range that he produced in starter’s minutes with Portland from ’01-’03.
Wells can score from anywhere and is the second scoring option behind Rasheed Wallace. He could elevate to No. 1 if Wallace, who is in the last year of his contract, gets traded. He can play both off-guard and small forward, but only qualifies at forward to start the season. If the club wants to go big upfront with Wallace and Zach Randloph, then we could see a lot of Wells at the two. He’s a top thirty forward, who can move up because of his ability to steal and dish. Expect 15-17 points, five rebounds, 1.5 steals and 3-4 assists.
