Keyon Dooling

Dooling is expected to share time with Earl Boykins as Brandon Jennings' backup. He's a good defender, but he's never averaged more than 9.7 points or 3.5 assists in a season. There's not much value to be found here.

Dooling is an interesting fantasy option because Laurence Frank’s dribble-drive offense is very guard-friendly, and starting point guard Devin Harris is notoriously brittle, and last year’s starting two guard, Vince Carter, is now a member of the Orlando Magic. Dooling is most effective as a slasher; his “floor general” skills have never caught up to his scoring ability, which makes him a liability as a long-term option at starter. As a fill-in at both guard spots and spot-starter, he could provide late-round value. We give Dooling the edge over Rafer Alston because of his experience in Frank’s system.

Dooling is very similar to Harris, but isn't as proficient at distributing the ball. He is a good slasher, great energy guy, and persistent defender, but he never developed an all-around offensive game and probably doesn't have the skills to run a team full-time. He's a great bench player in real-life, but doesn't have the specialist skills to warrant a bench spot.

Dooling comes off the bench to fill several roles for the Magic. He can play point guard and is also a good shooter. He might lose some minutes this year, but he's an able scorer who isn't afraid to shoot the ball.

The projected starting shooting guard, Dooling will have to play pretty well to keep his spot as a starter.

Dooling will need to battle Jameer Nelson for minutes, but he should get the starting nod. Nelson is a better offensive player, but with Steve Francis playing at the 2, the Magic need more size at the point. Dooling has played well in spurts, but with extended minutes, he could become a valuable utility player on your fantasy team. The biggest problem with Dooling is that he doesn't excel in the categories you need at guard (three point shooting, steals, assists). Over his career, he has strictly been a scoring guard, who does little elsewhere.

When Dooling signed with Miami, he appeared on the verge of assuming the role of backup point guard, and significant minutes were in his future. Shortly thereafter, the Heat brought Damon Jones to town and Dooling's future minutes took an immediate hit. The once-promising first rounder from Missouri has been a disappointment this far in his career. He'll need an injury to find any significant time this season, but the Miami Heat have a knack for turning around the career's of undervalued point guards. Dooling's main hope should be that some of that rubs off on him

Dooling's career has been injury plagued and his upside is now somewhat limited. He'll be the main backup at the point to Marko Jaric but the team could try to see what type of a player rookie Marcus Hatten has the potential to grow into. Either way, barring injury, don't expect much.
