Mike James

James, who started 50 games out of necessity for the Wizards in 2008-09, is a scoring point guard who doesn't even do that very efficiently these days. He is a decent long-range shooter and can at times be a pesky defender, so he can bring some occasional offense and energy off the bench.

James enters a situation in Houston ideal for a shoot-first guard. The problem is there are two other guys capable of bringing the same skill he brings. Incumbent starter Rafer Alston and free agent Steve Francis will compete with James to run alongside Tracy McGrady, who handles the ball much of the time once it gets over half court.

James has bounced around an awful lot for a generally productive player. Since 2001, James’ solid shooting and good perimeter defense have been employed by the Heat, the Pistons, the Raptors, Celtics, Rockets, Bucks, and Raptors (again). In his second tour of duty with Toronto, James had a career year, posting a 20.three-ppg scoring average that nearly doubled his career high, while dishing out 5.8 assists per game and shooting 44% from three. As Minnesota’s starter this year, he’ll be well-situated for success; he’ll team with rookie Randy Foye to form the T-Wolves best backcourt since Spree and Sam-I-Am were in town.

The Bucks needed to sign James in the offseason due to the injury to T. J. Ford. If Ford isn't healthy to start the season then James may become the starting point guard by default.

James will back up TJ Ford and will provide veteran leadership to a young Bucks squad.
