Cook is nothing more than a veteran reserve player. And with Trey Thompkins joining the team, he will likely see an even more reduced role this season.
Cook will probably spend the better part of the season at the end of the Clippers’ bench solemnly wishing he still had an end of the bench role with the Lakers. The Clippers’ lack of depth in the frontcourt should earn him decent minutes on nights that the regulars get into foul trouble or are absent due to injury, but his overall use on the team will likely be light in substance.
Cook is Orlando's most-athletic big man off the bench and shoots well from downtown. Still, with Orlando's best players manning the three front court positions, don't expect Cook to be a consistent fantasy performer this season.
Cook started 24 games last season, but that was due more to the Lakers’ rash of frontcourt injuries than anything Cook was doing. In the team’s best-case scenario, Cook would barely play at all. As it was, Cook’s scoring, minutes, rebounds, field goal, free throw and three-point shooting all declined in 2006-07, and we expect them to drop even more this year if the Lakers’ starters remain healthy. Cook’s only real asset is that he can shoot three pointers (40 percent last year), but he will not play enough minutes to make those numbers mean anything fantasy-wise.
Cook posted the best numbers of his career in every significant offensive category in 2005-06, averaging 7.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, and shooting at a 51% clip. However, the addition of Vladimir Radmanovic is projected to significantly decrease Cook's playing time, and he should not be regarded as much of a fantasy option.
Cook has good range on his jump shot for a power forward. Unfortunately, that's about all he can do. He's abysmal on the boards and hasn't displayed a lick of defensive prowess thus far in his young career. Cook will likely spell Kwame Brown for a few minutes each night but don't expect consistent minutes or production from this reserve forward.
The second-year power forward once again finds himself buried at the end of the Lakers' bench. Barring injuries to multiple frontcourt players, Cook will see limited, if not zero, minutes on the court.
With the additions of Karl Malone and Horace Grant, Cook looks like he won't be getting much playing time.
