ANALYSIS
Azubuike scored six points and pulled in three rebounds in 14 minutes in his lone preseason appearance with the Cavs. The 28-year-old guard averaged 13.9 points and 4.5 rebounds as recently as 2009-10, so another club may decide to bring him in.

Whether Azubuike's fantasy success from the 2008-09 season was a product of his own talent or Don Nelson's crazy-fast offense doesn't much matter: his new team, the New York Knicks, runs at about the same pace as the Warriors. The real question will be whether his body allows him to play sufficient minutes. The former Kentucky standout missed all but nine games last season with a torn patella tendon. As of press time, coach Mike D'Antoni said his new player was 50/50 to make training camp.
Azubuike is a poster-child for those that believe in per-36 minute stats, as his per-36 numbers have remained exactly the same over his first three seasons despite playing 16, 21, and 32 minutes per in those respective years. Because his minutes finally increased to near-starter level, his overall production also moved into near-starter range with averages of 14.4 points, 5.0 boards and 1.3 treys per game in his third year. Azubuike is a versatile swingman who appears to be Coach Don Nelson’s security blanket in Golden State, as Nelson is prone to play Azubuike at almost any position at any point in the game. Like a utility infielder in baseball, this lets Azubuike play on a regular basis despite not having a defined slot in the starting lineup. Expect this trend to continue this season, as Azubuike should continue to produce solid points and treys in the Nelly-ball system while also adding a sneaky steal and/or block per game as well.
Two years ago, Azubuike was playing in the D-League just hoping to get a chance to play in the NBA. Now, he is such a valued member of the Warriors that they matched a 3 year, $9 million deal from the Clippers just to keep him. Azubuike is a solid defender and will provide instant offense off the bench. He should be in the mix for some backup minutes at shooting guard and small forward.
Azubuike went from playing in the NBDL last year to starting nine games for the Warriors and averaged 7.1 points in 41 games. Azubuike is a solid defender and consistent 3-point shooter (43% last year), but will have a tough time finding minutes in the Warriors backcourt at shooting guard playing behind Monta Ellis and Marco Belinelli
Will compete for a reserve guard spot.
