Melo, 26, was a first-round selection of the Celtics in 2012 following one season at Syracuse, but appeared in only six NBA games as a rookie, spending most of his time at the D-League level. He was traded to the Grizzlies the following summer and was quickly waived, then played the 2013-14 season in the D-League after failing to win a roster spot with the Mavericks. Melo had been playing professionally in Brazil the last two seasons. Details surrounding the circumstances of Melo's death are unknown at this time.
