Nears double-double in loss
GGreensboro Swarm   G League (Hornets)
March 2, 2021
McCallum tallied 16 points (8-16 FG, 0-1 3Pt), nine assists and six rebounds over 40 minutes in Monday's 110-95 loss to Lakeland.
ANALYSIS
McCallum played a season-high 40 minutes Monday with several teammates out due to injuries, and he came within one assist of his first double-double of the year during the loss. He could continue to see increased run for the Swarm if the team isn't fully healthy.

When former teammate Darren Collison went down with a season-ending hip surgery last season with the Kings, McCallum filled in as the starting point guard, averaging 11.2 points, 0.8 three-pointers, 4.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 1.0 steal, and 0.2 blocks in 30 minutes per contest during the 30 games he started. On the year, McCallum averaged 7.4 points, 0.5 three-pointers, 2.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 0.2 blocks, and 0.7 steals in 21 minutes per contest through 68 games. While it isn't an eye-popping stat line, McCallum showed a lot of promise with the Kings, which ultimately led to the Spurs' interest in him. Now that Cory Joseph is with the Raptors, McCallum can fill in as a lead guard off the bench behind Tony Parker and Patty Mills, making the Spurs increasingly deep at almost every position. Because Parker and Mills are both established options on the Spurs roster, McCallum's minutes will most likely dip as he falls behind those two. However, both Parker and Mills experienced trouble with injuries last season, and should one or both of those players get injured this season, McCallum will be poised to provide productive minutes at the lead guard spot.
As a rookie last season, McCallum averaged 6.2 points, 2.7 assists, and 1.8 rebounds in 20 minutes per game. He appeared in 45 contests and made 10 straight starts in March and April while Isaiah Thomas was sidelined with a quad injury. Buried on the bench for the first half of the season – McCallum saw time in only nine of the Kings first 40 games – he made a handful of appearances for the Reno Bighorns of the D-League. In seven games in the D-League, McCallum showcased the skills that made him one of the top point guard recruits in the nation coming out of high school, averaging 20.0 points, 4.2 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 steals in nearly 36 minutes. Thomas is now out of the picture, but the Kings brought in free agent Darren Collison to fill the void. McCallum will again serve as the backup and should carve out a consistent spot in the rotation with the Kings featuring shallow depth at the point guard spot.
The team's second-round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft is somebody to keep an eye on. While McLemore was struggling in the Summer League in Las Vegas, McCallum played surprisingly well. McCallum will have a hard time making space for himself in the Kings' rotation, but his performances so far should earn him at least a little bit of action. In college his strengths were passing, stealing, and scoring, and he was an efficient shooter.
