The 17th overall pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Young has yet to make a tangible mark at the pro level, appearing in only 60 games for the Celtics over the last two seasons. Still just 21 years old, Young's youth has been somewhat of an excuse for his lack of development, but he now finds himself in serious jeopardy of being left off of the 15-man roster this fall. While the former blue-chip recruit has prototypical size and athleticism for an NBA wing, he's struggled mightily to find his shooting stroke -- his calling card coming out of Kentucky -- amid concerns about his work ethic. Young has spent considerable time in the D-League over the past two years. As a rookie, he averaged an encouraging 21.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 17 games for the Maine Red Claws, but his scoring numbers dipped to 15.3 points per game last season, while his three-point efficiency plummeted nearly 10 percentage points. Even with his struggles, Young still carries a fair amount of upside, but if the Celtics grow tired of waiting, he may be seeking a new home come November. Young is expected to compete with R.J. Hunter and rookie Ben Bentil for the final spot on the roster during training camp.
Young, the 17th pick of the 2014 draft, spent most of his rookie season sitting on the Boston bench while occasionally joining the D-League's Maine Red Claws to get some game reps. For the C's, the 19-year-old rookie appeared in 31 games, averaging 3.4 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 0.5 three-pointers in 11 minutes per game. He's a long-term project whom the Celtics hope can turn into a deep-shooting scoring threat. But the youngster's early performance casts shades of doubt. Young shot a disappointing 35 percent from the floor last year, hitting only 26 percent of his three-point attempts and 55 percent of his free throws. And things got worse during the 2015 summer league play, where in five games, he shot only 27 percent from the field. Expect 2015-16 to be another year of development for Young, though now he'll be competing with new rookie R.J. Hunter to become Boston's sharp shooter of the future.
Young is viewed as a scoring wing, though he needs to work on shot selection and three-point range. He was mostly a jump shooter at Kentucky, averaging 14.3 points on 41-percent shooting overall and 35 percent from beyond the three-point line. Only 19-years-old, he's young enough to develop those skills as well as others to become a capable perimeter scorer. He has the size (6-7) and wingspan to defend both shooting guards and small forwards while being a good rebounder for his spot. However, Young still has work to do on the defensive end of the floor. We didn't see him at all in summer league due to a neck injury he sustained in an automobile accident prior to June's draft. The organization doesn't feel the injury is serious, but they felt no need to push the rookie. Young enters a good situation in Boston, a team that doesn't need him to be an immediate contributor. He can simmer while backing up Jeff Green at the three and Avery Bradley at the two. If he develops quickly, it will allow the Celtics to shop Green. Young can be one of the next wave of three-and-D guys.
