2020 Fantasy Outlook
The first-round French forward enjoyed moderate success in his first NBA season, though he wasn't on the court too often. Doumbouya logged 19.8 minutes across 38 games and averaged 6.4 points, 3.1 boards, 0.7 threes and 0.7 combined blocks/steals. He spent an additional 16 games in the G League, where he saw significantly more playing time and enjoyed increased production. Despite the relatively-low output, Doumbouya flashed at times, posting a career-high 24 points in a Jan 15 win over Boston. He finished the season with two double-doubles and started 19 games due to periodic absences from Blake Griffin. Doumbouya has a chance to remain on the active roster all season, though he'll be behind Jerami Grant, who signed a $60M contract in the offseason. No. 19 pick Saddiq Bey will also compete for minutes with Doumbouya in 2020-21. Doumbouya is off the redraft fantasy radar in all but the deepest of leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio

Sekou Omar Doumbouya was born in 2000 in Conakry, Guinea. Doumbouya moved with his mother and three siblings to Fleury-les-Aubrais, France when he was one year old. He grew up playing soccer and started playing basketball when he was 12. By age 13, Doumbouya was already 6-foot-7. At age 14 and 15, he played parts of two seasons for INSEP, the national sports youth academy in France that produced Tony Parker, Evan Fournier, Boris Diaw and Ronny Turiaf. Teamed with future New York Knick Frank Ntilikina, Doumbouya helped France win the gold medal at the 2016 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship and was the team's leading scorer.

College/International Summary

Doumbouya solidified his place on the NBA Draft radar in the 2016 FIBA Under-18 Tournament. He was the youngest forward in the tournament and helped France win the gold medal by averaging 17.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. He scored 31 points in a win over Serbia and was named to the All-Star Five. Doumbouya had been a professional basketball player since he was 15 years old. He played for Poitiers Basket 86 in France for two seasons. In his second campaign, Doumbouya averaged 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds and won the Pro B Best Young Player award. The 6-foot-8 forward then joined Limoges CSP in the top French league. Despite being younger than the competition, he provided 7.7 points and 3.2 rebounds. As an exclamation point, Doumbouya scored 34 points in the regular-season finale. He made himself eligible for the 2019 NBA Draft and was selected at No. 15 overall by Detroit.

ANALYSIS
Doumbouya's sophomore campaign went similarly to his rookie campaign, though it's not encouraging that his numbers decreased nearly across the board. In 15.5 minutes per game, he averaged 5.1 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting just 37.9 percent from the field.

2019

Doumbouya was selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Pistons. The rookie appeared in 38 games, with 19 starts, for Detroit and also played in 16 G League games for the Grand Rapids Drive. Doumbouya made his NBA debut on Nov. 23 against the Bucks via a brief two minute appearance. The 19-year-old's first two double-digit scoring outings were also his first two double-doubles and occurred back-to-back. On Jan. 2 against the Clippers, he posted 10 points (4-11 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 2-3 FT), a career-best 11 rebounds and one steal in 27 minutes. Two nights later in a win over the Warriors, "Captain Cook" delivered 16 points (6-10 FG, 4-7 3Pt, 0-1 FT), 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Doumbouya's first 20-point game occurred on Jan. 15 during a victory at Boston. In 28 minutes, he recorded a career-high 24 points (10-13 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 2-4 FT), two rebounds, one assist and one steal. Over his 38 NBA games, Doumbouya averaged 6.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 19.8 minutes per game while shooting 39.0 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from three. Doumbouya played all but one of his G League games in November and December. Over his 16 G League appearances, he averaged 17.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.0 steals in 27.0 minutes per contest. In his last G League game on Mar. 6, Doumbouya delivered 30 points, eight boards, two dimes and a steal during a win over the Red Claws.

2019 Fantasy Outlook
Doumbouya was selected 15th overall by the Pistons in the 2019 Draft after playing for Limoges in France last year. In 39 games (15 starts) he averaged 7.2 points and 3.0 rebounds (47.8 FG%, 31.5 3P%, 75.6 FT%) in 18.1 minutes. While a raw prospect, Doumbouya is incredibly young -- turning 19 in late December -- and already has an NBA-ready body at 6-foot-9, 230 pounds. It's also important to consider that he's been playing professional basketball since 2015-16, including a Gold Medal in 2016 for France in the U18 Euro Championship A. He appeared in one summer league game for the Pistons, posting nine points on seven shots and two rebounds in 13 minutes, though he also committed two turnovers and two fouls. Doumbouya projects as a forward at the NBA level, but the Pistons won't be ready to simply hand him minutes, as the organization will continue to push for the postseason. In order to secure real minutes, the rookie will have to beat out the likes of Markieff Morris, Michael Beasley, Tony Snell and Svi Mykhaililuk. As a result, it seems likely that he can be ignored in most standard fantasy drafts.
