Following two collegiate seasons at Stanford, Okpala was selected with the 32nd overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. About two weeks later, he was traded to the Heat as part of a three-team trade that also notably sent T.J. Warren to the Pacers. Okpala's playing time as a rookie was limited mainly due to an Achilles injury. He made his NBA debut Oct. 23 in a win over the Grizzlies, grabbing one rebound. During his fifth and final appearance in a game against the Kings on Feb. 7, Okpala had his best performance of the campaign. The forward posted seven points, four rebounds, two steals, one assist and one block in 21 minutes.
