After being drafted in the second round (40th overall) by the Kings in 2019, James went on to spend most of his 2019-20 season with Sacramento, though he also had two stints with the G League's Stockton Kings. The rookie out of Wyoming appeared in 36 games (all as a reserve) for Sacramento -- two of which came in the Orlando bubble -- and three games for Stockton. James saw minutes for Sacramento in eight straight games from Nov. 19 to Dec. 4, averaging 4.1 points and 2.3 rebounds in 16.1 minutes per game during that span. The second-round selection set a personal best with 14 points on two separate occasions. On Nov. 22, James posted 14 points with three rebounds, three assists and one steal in 33 minutes of run at Brooklyn. Eight nights later, Nov. 30 against Denver, James tallied a career-high seven rebounds along with two steals. On Dec. 20 against Indiana, the rookie tallied 14 points, three boards, two dimes and a block over 24 minutes of play. Across his three G League appearances for Stockton, James averaged 15.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.3 blocks. On Jan. 11 during a G League win over Iowa, James exploded for 30 points, five rebounds, two dimes, three blocks, three treys and one steal.
