Personal Bio

Cassius Winston was born February 28, 1998, the son of Reg and Wendi Winston. Cassius was raised in Detroit, Michigan. Winston has two brothers, Khy and the late Zachary. Khy played basketball at Albion College. Cassius attended the University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy in the Motor City. During his senior season (2015-16), Winston led U-D Jesuit to an MHSAA Class A State Championship, and was named Mr. Basketball of Michigan. Winston chose Michigan State for college and attended the institution for four years, from 2016-2020. While at Michigan State, he graduated in just his third year of college, with a Bachelor of Science in Advertising Management. In his last two seasons as a Spartan, Cassius was a two-time consensus Second Team All-American. Fans can follow the Detroit native on Twitter @cassiuswinston.

College/International Summary

Winston attended Michigan State from 2016 through 2020 and appeared in 139 total games for the Spartans. As a freshman, the 6-foot-1 guard appeared in 35 games with five starts. He ranked tied for first in the Big Ten in assists -- his 182 dimes were the second most ever by a freshman at MSU, second only to NBA Hall of Famer Magic Johnson in 1977-78. In Winston's sophomore season (2017-18), the Detroit native was the undisputed starting point guard. He started 34 of 35 games and posted 12.6 points, 6.9 assists and 2.1 three-pointers per game. In 2018-19, Winston was the star of the team and lead MSU in points (18.8), assists (7.5), three-pointers (2.2) and steals (1.0) per game. Those stats earned Winston Big Ten Player of the Year honors and a spot on the Consensus Second Team All-American squad. Winston had a similar season during his senior year, again leading the Spartans in points, assists and three-pointers per game during the COVID-19 shortened season. After the 2019-20 season, he earned his second Consensus Second Team All-American honor.

Winston signed a two-way contract with Washington last month and will subsequently open the 2020-21 campaign with the Wizards' G League team, the Capital City Go-Go. The rookie will have a tough time battling for minutes with the Wizards this season, as he currently sits behind Russell Westbrook, Raul Neto and Ish Smith on the team's depth chart.
