Jalen Harris was born on August 14, 1998 in Dallas, Texas to Erion Harris and Karlin Kennedy. Both of Harris' parents played college basketball at Southern Methodist University. His mother graduated as SMU's all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and field goal percentage. Harris has two younger brothers and one sister. The combo guard was raised in Duncanville, Texas, where he attended Duncanville High School. As a junior, Harris was named the District 8-6A Offensive Player of the Year behind 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game. Harris won the award a second time as a high school senior, averaging 23.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists and two steals. Harris had a career-high 44--point game during his senior season, and he finished the campaign shooting 55 percent from the field, including 45 percent from three-point range. Harris made an impact at Louisiana Tech as a true freshman, averaging 10.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game, while earning a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team. As a sophomore, Harris emerged as Louisiana Tech's leading scorer, posting 15.3 points per game to go with 4.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals. Midway through the season, Harris decided to transfer and ultimately decided to sign with Nevada. After sitting out the 2018-19 season per NCAA transfer rules, Harris went on to have an impressive year for the Wolfpack, averaging 21.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. In a win over Air Force, Harris notched a career-high 38 points, besting the 32 points he scored against San Diego State. In a win over UNLV, Harris had 29 points, 14 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
