Poythress set a certain level of expectation after surprising over a brief six-game cameo as a rookie with the 76ers during the 2016-17 season. The Kentucky product averaged 10.7 points (on 46.3 percent shooting) and 4.8 rebounds over 26.2 minutes per contest. Following a washout 2017-18 season in Indiana during which he only averaged 4.2 minutes across 25 games, Poythress saw a greater degree of opportunity last year in his debut Hawks campaign. Poythress bumped up to 14.5 minutes across 21 games and parlayed them into averages of 5.1 points (on 49.4 percent shooting, including 39.1 percent from distance) and 3.6 rebounds. His skills were truly on display during an 18-game stint in the G League with the Erie Bayhawks, however, when he averaged 23.7 points (on 51.6 percent shooting), 9.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists, 1.3 blocks and 1.2 steals across 34.8 minutes. At 6-foot-8, Poythress has enough length to fill in at both forward spots, and his floor-spacing ability has the potential to render him a serviceable offensive asset off the bench. However, as it currently stands, minutes look like they could be at a premium for Poythress to open the coming season. Atlanta has a cast of thousands on its small forward depth chart that goes five-deep at minimum, while power forward is also crowded following the offseason acquisition of Jabari Parker and the selection of De'Andre Hunter with the fourth overall selection.
